Janu-weary

What day is it, January 74th?

There seems to be a general consensus that this January has lasted longer than any previous January on record. It does seem like a year’s worth of change has occurred in the past 4 weeks, but at least we made it through Dry Jan in one piece. And it’s Friday, we are so back bay-be.

In today’s Buzz:

  • We’ve Got a Runner (~18k runners, actually)

  • Sundance Opens in Balboa

  • New “Daylighting” Rule in CM

  • Weekend Agenda

Let’s dive in!

Surf City Marathon This Weekend

Thats a nice PCH you have there, it would be a shame if something were to…block it entirely.

Look were not much of runners at the Back Bay Buzz (unless running your mouth counts as cardio), but we respect the desire to push your body to the absolute limit to complete a 26.2 mile slog for time. The Beach Mile and Surf City Marathon will take place in Huntington Beach on Saturday Feb 1st and Sunday Feb 2nd respectively, with the Beach Mile starting at 11am and the Marathon starting at 6:30am. PCH will be closed on Sunday from ~1am to 2:30pm depending on the cross street. Expect traffic in both directions as locals and tourists alike look for detours. For a full list of road closures, click here. For a schedule of events for the marathon, click here. Enjoy your shin splints!

Sundance Opens in Balboa

Located at 331 Marine Ave Balboa Island

We know we are a little late on this one, but we at the BBB love to showcase new businesses opening in town, especially sustainable fashion shops like Sundance Thrift Shop. Open as of Jan 18th, Sundance is a family-owned thrift shop “Giving items a second life and keeping them out of landfills”. With an emphasis on sustainability, community and supporting local non-profits, this gem of a store is the perfect weekend stop to peruse well curated, gently used finds. Located at 331 Marine on Balboa Island, open daily from 11am-7pm. Click here to view their Instagram.

New “Daylighting” Rule Makes Parking Trickier in CM

No parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk, amigos.

POV: It’s Saturday morning, you are late for Mommy and Me outdoor pilates class. You are turning left onto Santa Ana from an unprotected side street, some joker has parked right on the corner to your left, causing a huge blind spot. Cars race by, but you can’t see any oncoming traffic. You ease into the intersection, slamming your brakes as a chainsmoking barista nearly hits you. He honks and gestures rudely as he races past in a dented 2009 BMW 3 series. Your 4yo asks what that curse word means that you didn’t realize you said out loud. Your palms are sweating as you say a prayer and gun it into the intersection, narrowly missing an oncoming minivan. You hope they are not going to the same pilates class.

Sound familiar? Well that situation is exactly what AB 413 is meant to alleviate. Starting Jan 1, parking within 20 feet of a marked or unmarked crosswalk is prohibited. While a boon for pedestrians and cyclists, the new rule makes an already hairy parking situation hairier than the Trader Joes parking lot on 17th. Having lived (and parked) in both Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, it’s enough to consider selling everything and getting a Vespa. More info, click here.

WHAT TO WATCH

We started the show “Prime Target”, choosing to ignore the fact that the main character played a bit of a cad in the previous season of White Lotus. We were willing to give the show the benefit of the doubt until the main character, a supposedly brilliant Maths post-graduate, entered the phrase “prime numbers” into the Cambridge research database. That’s like Gordon Ramsay googling “burger recipe”. We’re out, but let us know how it goes.

  • Companion - For a “fun” date night. (Theaters)

  • Valiant One - Not two. (Theaters)

  • Paradise - Ish. (Hulu)

  • Mythic Quest, season four premiere (AppleTV+)

  • You’re Cordially Invited - Ferrell and Witherspoon. (Prime Video)

  • The Pro Bowl (ESPN, ABC)

WHAT TO EAT AND DRINK

come for the chips, stay for the margs…

The Al Pastor Taco never misses…

Grab a taco and marg at Wild Taco, a Baja inspired eatery dedicated to fresh ingredients and wild caught seafood. You know, to celebrate Dry Jan being over. Feeling more of a date night vibe? Head across the parking lot to Palmilla for a more intimate, exotic atmosphere (reservations)

Please ignore any typos, our editor has begun quoting Hemingway and Hunter S. Thompson interchangeably, we’re not sure if Dry Jan has done him any good.
