Newport Beach Bans E-Bikes (Kind of)

Rye Goods announces new location opening date

Hello Newport Beach and Costa Mesa, and Happy Memorial Day Weekend! If you are new here, The Back Bay Buzz is dedicated to bringing you just the right amount of news and events for locals of Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. No crime, politics, spam or boring stuff.

Today’s email is a day late because we gave our writer the day off for Memorial Day, we hope you had a great long weekend.

Apparently there were some big swells on Sunday, we hope no one we know was foolish enough to ignore the flags and send it over the falls. The beach was packed on Monday, marking the definitive beginning of the summer season and the unholy fuster-cluck of a parking situation near any body of water.

In today’s Buzz:

  • Newport New Rules: Ebikes Banned on the Sand

  • Rye Goods Announces Soft Opening

  • Plan Ahead for Father’s day

No More E-Bikes on the Sand: Newport Beach Cracks Down

You are on thin ice, young man.

It’s official: bikes, e-bikes, scooters, pedicabs, and even surreys (what is that) are now banned from the sand in Newport Beach. The City Council unanimously approved the ordinance on May 13 in response to a surge in complaints and safety concerns—particularly as powerful e-bikes (some hitting 28+ mph) have become more common.

While bikes and e-bikes are still allowed on the boardwalk between 36th Street and E Street (at a strict 8 mph limit), the beach itself is off-limits. Officers say riders have been zipping through sand dunes—some of which are protected habitats for endangered birds, butterflies, and lizards.

“Fast bikes, low visibility, and big summer crowds? Not a good combo,” warned NBPD Sgt. Kelley Maslin.

Fines start at $100 for a first offense and climb to $500 for repeat violations. Left your ride fastened to a signpost or chilling at the beach? The city can now impound it as abandoned property and auction it off after 90 days.

Locals seem on board with the new rules. “I’ve seen progress,” said resident Adam Leverenz. “Teens doing wheelies past speed limit signs are now getting stopped by officers.”

Rye Goods Announces Soft Opening for Costa Mesa Location

Soft opening coming June 13th

Wow, that was fast. We first reported on the impending completion of Rye Good’s Costa Mesa location 2 weeks ago, and now they officially have a date for the soft opening. For those of you who missed it: the CM location on 17th street will replace their Lido location and have a full wine bar and eating area. If any one of you cool kids have an extra press pass for the soft-launch, speak up.
