New Year, Newport

Our New Year's resolution is to change your mind about local news.

Good morning Back Bay Baes! You are reading the first edition of Back Bay Buzz, the best local newsletter in the world (and by “world” we mean Newport Beach and Costa Mesa). While these newsletters will usually come out on Mondays and Fridays, I decided to send the inaugural post on the first of this month. New year, new newsletter.

In today’s Buzz:

  • Newport Beach Boat Parade Winner

  • Matty’s Patty’s still drawing huge crowds after opening

  • Air Quality Alert Prompts Fire Ban

  • How to recycle your Christmas Tree

Let’s dive in!

AND THEN WHAT HAPPENED?

And the 116th Newport Beach Boat Parade Winner is…Everyone

Seriously, we didn’t know the boat parade had over a dozen different awards categories including best sailboat, best power boat, best use of animation and special effects and best use of lights. Below is the winner of Best Lights, which in our opinion, is the only one that matters.

Matty Sure Can Draw a Crowd

Beloved Canadian chef, author and entrepreneur Matty Matheson opened his second Matty’s Patty’s Burger Club at 1734 Newport Blvd on Friday, December 20th. Nearly two weeks later, the restaurant is still seeing lines out the door as patrons vie to get their hands on Matty’s signature smashburgers, poutine and onion rings. This is the second Matty’s Patty’s to open and the first to open in the US. Matty is also well known in the art, surf and motorcycle world that makes up the unique local scene in Costa Mesa. While we will miss the deliciously greasy ham n cheese croissants from Oh Those Donuts (the previous occupant of Matty’s Patty’s building), the new spot will no doubt become an old fave for Costa Mesa foodies.

Thank You for Not Smoking

A wood burning ban again went into effect across most of Orange County due to air quality alerts in the South Coast Air Basin and will likely continue into New Years Day. This prohibits burning wood in indoor fireplaces as well as outdoor burning and includes manufactured wood firelogs, bonfires and fireworks. This will possibly put a damper on some holiday festivities, not that your uncle who always brings the illegal fireworks has much regard for local ordinances anyways…

How to Get Rid of Your Christmas Tree

The time for de-decking your halls is nigh, and fortunately Costa Mesa and Newport Beach waste management will pickup your holiday tree for a set time. Newport Beach trash haulers will collect trees left on the curb from December 26th to January 15th. Trees can be set to the side or placed upright in the organics cart on collection day. Trees must be completely bare (remove all lights, tinsel and decoration) to be eligible for pickup. If taller than 6ft, trees will need to be cut in half. Flocked trees (trees with fake snow) must be treated as trash and placed in the black top trash bins or called in as a bulky item pickup. Why? Because flock you, that’s why. Costa Mesa trash haulers will perform the same service from January 2nd-16th, all the above rules apply.
