What's Happening in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach this weekend...

TOGETHER WITH

Hello Back Bay Beaus, happy Friday!
If you are new here, The Back Bay Buzz is dedicated to bringing you just the right amount of news and events for locals of Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. No crime, politics, spam or boring stuff.
Did we survive the monsoon? All the Dad’s collectively stood by the window watching the rain muttering “we needed this”. There is still time to book Father’s Day lunch if you book like, right now. We are in for a “partly cloudy” weekend with a side of muggy, but don’t let that keep you from getting out and about this weekend as the marine layer will burn off around noon and stay off for a few hours. There is lots to do:

Take Flight with Beginner-Friendly Aerial Yoga in Huntington Beach!
Open Aerial Yoga in Huntington Beach offers beginner-friendly aerial yoga classes seven days a week, plus a growing kids' program that's perfect for little flyers in training.
Aerial yoga combines traditional poses with a soft hammock suspended from the ceiling, helping you stretch deeper, build core strength, and decompress your spine—all while floating a few feet off the ground. It’s great for anyone curious about yoga, movement, or simply trying something new (no experience required!).
Whether you’re joining a group class, introducing your kids to something unique, or planning a one-of-a-kind birthday celebration—Open Aerial is where fitness meets flight.

Proposed Snug Harbor Surf Park Could Bring Machine-Made Waves to Newport Beach

Proposed location of the Snug Harbor wave pool at NB Golf Course
Praying for surf may be a thing of the past: Developers have unveiled detailed plans for Snug Harbor Surf Park, a recreation complex proposed for the Newport Beach Golf Course, just off the 73 and 55 freeways. If approved, it would be Orange County’s first-ever wave pool, opening as early as spring 2028.
The project includes a 5-acre surf lagoon, capable of generating up to 1,000 programmable waves per hour—ranging from gentle rollers for beginners to 8-foot barrels for seasoned surfers. The site would also feature warming pools, a spa, outdoor seating, a three-story clubhouse, and on-site athlete lodging.
Don’t ditch your clubs just yet: the project would retain much of the existing golf course, preserving holes both north of Irvine Avenue and south of Mesa Drive, and connecting them with a cart path. A starter shack and underground golf cart storage are also planned.
Snug Harbor’s name nods to a beloved local bar from the 1950s near the old cannery, reflecting the developers’ aim to blend innovation with Old Newport nostalgia.
The Newport Beach Planning Commission will hold a study session on June 19 at 6 p.m., with public comments on the environmental impact report accepted through July 7. A formal vote could come later this year. No City Council approval is required unless appealed.
We don’t know about you, but for now we will stick to the free wave pool down the street.
