Fashion Island Getting new Italian Spot in Amalfi

Michelin Guide Chef comes to NB, Dog Costume Contest, NB Film Fest

In partnership with

Hello Back Bay Bébés, happy Monday.

We sincerely hope none of you were crashed into by a rogue helicopter in HB over the weekend. That would be almost as bad as giving up Bronze to Chile in the Elite16 Volleyball tournament. Thank you to Nuss, Brasher, Donlin & Denaburg for saving our honor with top podium spots.

To our new readers—welcome! The Back Bay Buzz delivers just the right amount of news and events for locals in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. No crime, no politics, no spam—just the good stuff. We scan newspapers, blogs, social media, business journals, and Google alerts so you don’t have to.

In today’s Buzz:

  • New Italian Coming to FI

  • Spooky Thursday in CDM

  • NB Film Festival starts this week

New Italian Spot Coming to FI

Oliver’s Osteria Laguna location.

Amalfi by Oliver’s is headed to Fashion Island (401 Newport Center Dr, Suite A104), a new Italian concept from chef Erik De Marchi—the force behind Laguna Beach’s Oliver’s Osteria (Michelin Bib Gourmand) and Oliver’s Trattoria in Irvine. “Oliver’s” is a family nod: both restaurants—and now this new spot—are named after De Marchi’s son.

Listed as “coming soon,” Amalfi will serve lunch and dinner with a street-market through-line: Neapolitan cuoppo (paper cones of just-fried seafood/veg), amalfitano specialties, pizza al taglio by the slice, and bright, handmade pasta plates. De Marchi grew up in Italy, trained at a culinary academy there, and cooked across Southern California before taking all of his skill and experience to open his first restaurant in Laguna. No opening date yet, but if his track record is any clue, plan on clean flavors, simple ingredients done right, and a venue “bursting with Mediterranean warmth”.
