Here's to a bright sunny weekend in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa

Well, we’ve made it past “Quitters Day”, the second Friday of January that marks the day that the majority of New Year’s Resolutions fall by the wayside. How’s that fitness routine coming along?

We will be taking a look at what to Watch, Eat, Drink and Do this weekend in Newport Beach & Costa Mesa. It’s a bad weekend to be a dirty soda.

In today’s Buzz:

  • Winds Calm in LA and Socal

  • Theres Something in the Water (its poop)

  • The Weekend Agenda

Let’s dive in!

AND THEN WHAT HAPPENED?

  • Calming Winds Allow Firefighters to Contain LA Fires

    • Calmer than expected Santa Ana winds allowed fire crews to push to contain the LA fires that are still burning. Several neighborhoods have had their evacuation orders lifted as of Thursday night. While the Eaton and Palisades fires are still only 55% and 27% contained respectively, the lack of strong winds allowed a much needed respite for emergency responders and those supporting the victims.

    • Air quality for OC remains good due to prevailing winds pushing smoke out to sea

    • Running list of LA Fire support resources can be found here

  • Sewage Spill in Laguna Closes Beaches

    …more like La-poo-na Beach

    • Listen, this isn’t your grandad’s local newsletter: If there is poo in the water we are going to say it. On Tuesday, Jan 14, a significant sewage spill occurred in Laguna Beach due to a break in a force main sewer line near Laguna Niguel Regional Park. Approximately 465,000 gallons of sewage were released, leading to the closure of the coastal area from Treasure Island Beach to Table Rock at Aliso Beach. Swimming, surfing, and diving in this area are prohibited until water quality tests confirm safety.

WEEKEND AGENDA

WHAT TO WATCH

If you returned from your holiday vacation and were left wondering what it was you actually did for your job again, you’re not alone. As we grapple with return to office mandates, new managers, new Presidents and TikTok bans, the new season of Severance offers a perfect escape from the office (its about a guy who can’t escape his office). *Slams laptop shut til Monday*

Here is what we are watching this weekend:

  • Severance, Season Two premiere. (AppleTV+)

  • Wolf Man. Scary. (Theaters)

  • Presence. Very scary. (Theaters)

  • Unstoppable. Inspired by the true story of Anthony Robles. ( Prime)

  • Back in Action. Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, et al. (Netflix)

  • SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night. (Peacock)

  • Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy. Great, more Diddy content. (Peacock)

WHAT TO EAT AND DRINK

  • The new Wok Bok Bowl at Crack Shack

Pairs well with a Spa Day (not Dry Jan friendly)

    • The good life is all about taking the simple things very seriously, and Crack Shack takes their chicken very seriously. We sampled the new(ish) Wok Bok bowl at Crack Shack this week and we are in love. Orange chicken oysters, green cabbage, arugula, cukes, cashews, and a garlic-chili lime vinaigrette all come together for a great time in your mouth. While this chicken salad may not be the best for your new fitness routine, it will definitely make you reconsider what a good asian chicken salad should be. Voted one of the most family friendly restaurants in Costa Mesa (by us), Crack Shack is the perfect chicken spot for an early dinner with the kids. Check out their menu here.

WHAT TO DRINK

  • A Dirty Soda at The Kickstand Newport Beach

our new favorite Diet Coke dealer…

    • If you still haven’t given up your Dry Jan plans, but still want to get your diet coke fix, check out newest (possibly only) dirty soda stand in Newport Beach. This tiny soda shop is built into the back of the Pedego bike rental shop behind Baja Sharkeez. With flavors like The Dirty Classic (Diet Coke with Coconut Cream and Lime) and the Castaway (Dr. Pepper with Vanilla and Coconut Cream) its the perfect indulgence to make you forget you are two weeks sober (thats one week longer than our editor, the quitter). Here’s how to find them.
