Out of the Frying Pan...

...and straight into Fire Season.

This weekend we take a pause to send our thoughts and prayers to our friends in the North that have been affected by the LA fires. To donate to the relief efforts, see below for our non-profit recommendations.

🔥 Ways to Donate to LA Fire Victims:

Here are some trustworthy non-profits to donate to support the victims of the LA Fires:

NOTABLE HEADLINES

  • High Winds Cause Damage and Power Failures in OC

    • Newport Beach and Costa Mesa were mostly spared from major damage during the high winds that occurred Monday and Tuesday. However, several trees were downed over power lines causing minor power outages

  • Air Quality Alerts remained at “Unhealthy” due to Santa Ana winds pushing smoke from the fires out to sea where it continues to drift south. Keep this in mind this weekend as you consider outdoor activities.

  • Floating Trash Collector Ready to Launch by Feb 25’

    • A floating, solar powered trash collector will automate the gathering of trash and debris from the Upper Newport Back Bay in response to trash floating down the San Diego creek and collecting in the Back Bay and shoreline. The $5.5M project has been in the works since it was first proposed in 2015 after the successful introduction of similar machines in Baltimore Harbor (endearingly called Mr. Trash Wheel).

The Upper Newport Bay Trash Collector will also serve as a river boat casino.

  • More Pickleball Courts on the Way

    • The Tennis courts that used to belong to Palisades Tennis Club off PCH near Fashion Island will be voted on by the City Planning Committee tonight whether the tennis courts located near fashion island should be converted to Pickleball courts controlled by TTC Newport (formerly The Tennis Club Newport) and will be shared by the Hyatt Regency next door. This spot of land was currently in limbo because it fell within a separate Coastal Zoning Commission district that needed to approve the project before giving the project a go. The motion is widely expected to pass. Look this is hard to explain for those not deep in the tennis/PB scene but its a big deal. More to come.

WHAT TO WATCH

  • “American Primeval”

“American Primeval” is a new Netflix miniseries. The western miniseries, which premiered on Netflix on Jan. 9, stars Betty Gilpin and Taylor Kitsch. It follows the perilous journey of a young mother and her son as they fight to start a new life while also examining the struggle for control of the American West. The series delves into the violent clashes between pioneers, Indigenous people, soldiers, and Mormons, as well as the complex conflict between religion and culture in a harsh, fear-filled world. “American Primeval” is out on Netflix now.

WHAT TO EAT AND DRINK

  • A Croissant at Chaupain. The good life is all about taking the simple things very seriously, and Chaupain takes their croissants very seriously. Saunter on over to Chaupain in Newport for a pain au chocolat and café au lait for your Saturday ritual and contemplate your most recent NYE resolutions.

How a Pain Au Chocolate should look. A hill I will die on…
