Costa Mesa Fire Station Gets a Facelift

Also how is it already MID. APRIL.

Hello Newportians and Costa Mesans! Apologies for the late send, we were one writer short over the weekend. For those of you who are new to the newsletter, welcome! The Monday post is a shorter read than our event-heavy Friday dispatch, covering anything interesting that happened over the weekend and events happening Monday-Thursday. Did anyone make it out to the Japan fair on at OC fairgrounds?? We want to live vicariously through you.

In today’s Buzz:

  • Costa Mesa Fire Station no. 2 gets reconstructed

  • I’ve got a fever, and the only prescription is more Pickleball

  • Sunny days ahead

Costa Mesa Firestation No. 2 Approved for Reconstruction

Municipal architecture from the 70s certainly has a distinct…something.

Costa Mesa City Council has approved a $1.78 million contract with Irvine-based Accenture Infrastructure and Capital Projects LLC to manage the reconstruction of Fire Station No. 2 on Baker Street. The $15.1 million project, slated to begin this fall and complete by late 2027, will expand the station by approximately 40%, including upgrades to crew areas, offices, vehicle bays, and the addition of a new exercise room. Temporary modular structures will maintain on-site operations and living quarters for firefighters during the two-year construction period. Funding will largely come from bonds, details of which will be finalized by October.

More Pickleball, Hotel Rooms coming to Newport

Are we completely ignoring the Padel community? Yes. Yes we are.

Tomorrow, April 9, the California Coastal Commission will review Newport Beach’s request to update development standards at the Newport Beach Country Club. The proposed changes would expand hotel capacity, add pickleball courts, and introduce condominium units at the facility located on East Coast Highway. The project, which sparked lengthy community debates due to pickleball court concerns, includes 14 new pickleball courts, fewer tennis courts, and additional hotel rooms. The Coastal Commission meeting begins at 9 a.m., and the public can view a livestream or submit comments online. Further requests for acknowledgement from the Padel community will continue to be denied.
