Hello Back Bay Denizens, happy Monday.

This was the last weekend before school starts for many, and what a weekend it was. Cool, sunny, breezy with just a hint of anxiety that comes from seeing Halloween decor at Target in mid August. News and events wise, we are in a bit of a lull that comes in between seasons and the back to school rush. On the agenda this coming week is getting a smash burger at Palms n Patties (SOCO), snag a free towel at Luke’s Lobster (Balboa) and root for the lifeguards to win the Waffle Eating Contest at Cappy’s for National Waffle Day.

Waffle Eating Contest at Cappy’s Benefits Make-a-Wish

Mark your calendars: National Waffle Day is Sunday, August 24, and Newport Beach’s first responders are once again squaring off in a waffle-eating contest at Cappy’s Café to benefit Make-A-Wish Orange County and the Inland Empire. Police, fire, and lifeguards will compete to see who can put away the most waffles starting at 8 a.m. at the West Coast Highway staple. Last year, the fire department came out on top and the event raised over $1,200 for local wishes.

This year’s contest will also feature 8-year-old Newport Beach resident Tristan, a Make-A-Wish recipient who recently got his dream trip to snorkel with nurse sharks in the Florida Keys. Tickets are $25, include breakfast (anything but steak or seafood), and go straight to supporting wishes for children with critical illnesses. First responders eat free, but the bragging rights? Those have to be earned bite by bite.
